Today is the anniversary of the attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan and the wounding of his press secretary James Brady. As you ( the frequent readers of this blog ) know I am a great admirer of former President Reagan so of course I felt that I had to comment on this anniversary. While much of my childhood took place under President Reagan I was in fact to young to remember the actual shooting however I am struck still to this day at the grace with which that good and decent man conducted himself even with a bullet in his body. The President was a man of great humor, he was also always concerned about others before himself. The accounts of him making jokes to Nancy like "Honey I forgot to duck" and to the doctors " I hope your all republicans" made in some small way Comforted the anxious public and showed the true nature of the man.
While the Former President Passed away James Brady is still with us. It is the Bradys who have had to live everyday of the last twenty-five years in hardship. For you see while the President was wounded and took three weeks or so to recover he left the hospital on his feet with all of his faculties in place. Mr. Brady was not so lucky while he still posses full use of his keen mind, his body is impared. The bullet that tore thru his skull left him unable to use one arm and one leg and left him confined to a wheel chair. So it is the Brady's that we should keep in our thoughts.
The purpose of this post was to say that thank Goodness that the President wasn't killed in that attempt. American need his strength and vision to guid us thru the turbulant waters of the 1980's to stand up to the evil of the soviet empire. To tell Americans that we where indeed not past our zenith but where in fact a shinining city on the hill. To inspire a generation of Americans. So once again I say Thank you President Reagan.
