Decline of a once great and noble party
This Tuesday was a bleak day for the democratic party. A small minority of democratic activists in Connecticut decided that Senator Joesph Lieberman, a man who has been a loyal democrat all of his adult life. A man who rode buses down to Alabama to march for civil rights. A man who's voting record has been overwhelmingly liberal in the senate, a man who was just six short years ago nominated to run for Vice President with Al Gore is now “not democrat enough”. Now he is to conservative to represent Connecticut in the senate? I ask, did he vote for the Bush tax cuts? No! Did he vote for the cuts in spending? No! Did he vote for any of the major conservative proposals in the last two years? No! With the exception of joining the gang of 14 and of voting for Chief Justice Roberts ( a man who was extremely well qualified). He has voted with his party over ninety (90%)percent of the time.
But because Senator Lieberman voted for a strong national security. Because he did not turn a blind eye to the atrocity's done by Islamic fascists, because he is not a cut and run, surrender at the first sign of difficulty, and not a member of the "Blame America first" democrats, he is abandoned by his party. It's truly a shame, yet he will run as an independent, he will win and I hope that many within the democratic leadership will be forced to take a big bite of crow and a good hard look at the direction of their once noble party.
I would ask these democrats if they remember the name of Neville Chamberlain? If they recall what trying to negotiate with tyrants and fanatics got him? I also wonder if these same people would, have called upon FDR to get out of WWII after the first bloody days? Would there cries have been “ We can't win!” “ It's a quagmire!” or would they have been more truthful with old Franklin “Mr. President it's too hard!” Only to see American and the Allies victorious and Europe freed from Nazism!
I wonder if they would have said that President Roosevelt was a "warmonger" after all if we had cut and run there would have been peace and less loss of life, for us. I'm sure that they would have promoted the idea of “ negotiating with the Moderate element of the Nazi party”. That of course would have meant that most of Europe would have stayed under Hitlers boot, countless millions more would have been executed and how many millions more Jewish people would have been forced to concentration camps and brutally killed. But hey at least the American liberals would have had peace, and peace would have been worth it right? Thank God FDR was not one of these new liberals.
I believe that peace at any cost breeds slavery. I must say that I am dumb founded at modern liberalism, those who claim to be the voices for the oppressed, the down trodden, the poor, for womens rights, for equality of race and gender, for freedom of choice, and for rampant democracy seem today to be the first to abandon those goals when obtaining them for others gets to be even slightly difficult.
Liberalism was once about equality, ending racism, helping the poor, suffrage for women and a strong vital national defense because they knew that if we lost our basic freedom to any foreign oppressor the ideas that they hold dear and our ability to debate issues would cease to exist.
I wonder what happened to this once great and noble political party? On a closing note, let me say that no one wants war. America is a peace loving nation, the idea of going to war is a horrific one. However there are times when it is necessary to ensure the rights and freedoms of man and to stop tyranny. If the democratic party does not realize that from time to time we must fight and yes even die to defend the very freedoms that allow our debate, it will be that much easier for us to lose those very freedoms.
