Voting?

The primary election that past recently selected those candidates that would be on the November ballot. Those that would have a chance to govern and make the policy we all live under. Now I would like to take a minute to remind people of the requirements to vote, you must be 18 years old, you must be a citizen of the United States, you must have been registered for at least thirty days prior to the election, you must be a resident in the precinct in which you intend to vote. There is no poll tax, no voter exam, no gender requirement, no racial requirement, you have the right to a secret ballot so no one has to know how you voted, all you must do is show up at your polling place and show valid I.D. ( which to the NAACP is not racists its to make sure you are who you say you are to avoid voter fraud) oh yes and all of us who are natural born citizens where born with this right. Others hundreds of years ago fought bitterly for this right. Women where denied this right until 1920 , and many African Americans where denied this basic right until the passage of the voting rights act of 1964.

My point is that a lot of people before us gave so much of themselves, their sweat, their energy, and in some cases their very lives for the right to vote. Yet many of us can't be " bothered" to take time out of our busy day to go vote. This very fact disgusts me, I have voted in every major election for the last ten years and it has never taken me more then ten minutes to cast my vote. I know that in those ten minutes I could have been buying something, surfing the Internet, eating fatty foods, talking on my cell phone, or watching reality t.v. But to me, my right as a citizen is worth ten minutes two days every other year( thats if you vote in a primary and general election).
Our society and government doesn't ask a whole lot of us, there is no draft, many of us because of deductions get back more money then we pay in in income taxes most years, and yet many can't be bothered to take a few minutes every second year to go and choose who our leaders will be. That my friends is where the term lazy American's comes from! This I find offensive, it is a disgrace, this lack of inaction is unworthy of such a noble people. Is it so much to ask that we get off our large posteriors one day every second year and go and actually choose who our leaders should be?That we actually have a hand in the shaping of the future of this country that we all claim to love! No It's easier to stay at home with our collective heads buried in the sand, oblivious to what's taking place in our own government, only occasionally coming up to bitch and complain the whole while doing nothing to change the situation.

Having witnessed people in a foreign land, ravaged by war, travel countless miles, many times under the threat of death simply because they wanted the to be able to cast their vote, to have their voice heard, to be able to shape the future of their country I can only wonder why it's worth it to them yet, many of us who have never and will likely never know a tenth of hardships that they have suffered, can't be bothered. So think on that my country men and the next time a pesky election rolls around consider taking action.

Decline of a once great and noble party

This Tuesday was a bleak day for the democratic party. A small minority of democratic activists in Connecticut decided that Senator Joesph Lieberman, a man who has been a loyal democrat all of his adult life. A man who rode buses down to Alabama to march for civil rights. A man who's voting record has been overwhelmingly liberal in the senate, a man who was just six short years ago nominated to run for Vice President with Al Gore is now “not democrat enough”. Now he is to conservative to represent Connecticut in the senate? I ask, did he vote for the Bush tax cuts? No! Did he vote for the cuts in spending? No! Did he vote for any of the major conservative proposals in the last two years? No! With the exception of joining the gang of 14 and of voting for Chief Justice Roberts ( a man who was extremely well qualified). He has voted with his party over ninety (90%)percent of the time.

But because Senator Lieberman voted for a strong national security. Because he did not turn a blind eye to the atrocity's done by Islamic fascists, because he is not a cut and run, surrender at the first sign of difficulty, and not a member of the "Blame America first" democrats, he is abandoned by his party. It's truly a shame, yet he will run as an independent, he will win and I hope that many within the democratic leadership will be forced to take a big bite of crow and a good hard look at the direction of their once noble party.

I would ask these democrats if they remember the name of Neville Chamberlain? If they recall what trying to negotiate with tyrants and fanatics got him? I also wonder if these same people would, have called upon FDR to get out of WWII after the first bloody days? Would there cries have been “ We can't win!” “ It's a quagmire!” or would they have been more truthful with old Franklin “Mr. President it's too hard!” Only to see American and the Allies victorious and Europe freed from Nazism!

I wonder if they would have said that President Roosevelt was a "warmonger" after all if we had cut and run there would have been peace and less loss of life, for us. I'm sure that they would have promoted the idea of “ negotiating with the Moderate element of the Nazi party”. That of course would have meant that most of Europe would have stayed under Hitlers boot, countless millions more would have been executed and how many millions more Jewish people would have been forced to concentration camps and brutally killed. But hey at least the American liberals would have had peace, and peace would have been worth it right? Thank God FDR was not one of these new liberals.

I believe that peace at any cost breeds slavery. I must say that I am dumb founded at modern liberalism, those who claim to be the voices for the oppressed, the down trodden, the poor, for womens rights, for equality of race and gender, for freedom of choice, and for rampant democracy seem today to be the first to abandon those goals when obtaining them for others gets to be even slightly difficult.

Liberalism was once about equality, ending racism, helping the poor, suffrage for women and a strong vital national defense because they knew that if we lost our basic freedom to any foreign oppressor the ideas that they hold dear and our ability to debate issues would cease to exist.

I wonder what happened to this once great and noble political party? On a closing note, let me say that no one wants war. America is a peace loving nation, the idea of going to war is a horrific one. However there are times when it is necessary to ensure the rights and freedoms of man and to stop tyranny. If the democratic party does not realize that from time to time we must fight and yes even die to defend the very freedoms that allow our debate, it will be that much easier for us to lose those very freedoms.

Perspective

I was at a gas station last week, and while I was standing in line to pay for my overpriced gas and my Mt. Dew ( which I believe God himself created) I happen to over hear the young women complaining about how she had gone over her cell phone minutes and was going to be charged extra on her bill. She continued to wine and moan about it. I also heard the grumbling of others complaining about gas prices, the heat, or about how they had to put off there vaction for this reason of that. It was at that moment that I was thankful to be an American.

I was glad that I lived in a country that was so prosperious that people had these kinds of problems to complain about. I realized that the overwhelming majority of those in that little store in Michigan and in America herself would have food in there bellys, a roof over there head, clothing on there back, clean air and water to drink ( by clean I mean it doesnt give you typhod or scryvy) that they can call there President all the fowl names in the book ( usually blaming him for the gas prices) and not have to worry that the police will drag them from there home and lock them away in a gulog.

While I am sure these peoples problems are important to them, I wondered if they ever stop and say " Hey all in all Im ok" I have been to and seen parts of the world where people must work 18 hours a day everyday just to put food in there bellys. Where the water may kill there children. Where ruthless men can assualt them and there familys without fear of punishment. Where if they where to call there President even half the names we call ours they and likely there familys would be drug away and shot. Yet most of those people who have a lot of reasons to complain didn't, rather they work, and pray and thank there God for what they do have. Once you've seen that, having to wait a few extra minutes in a convience store line will seem a whole lot less important.

While we should always strive to make our lives better, I believe that those of us who have been bless with first world birth should take time out of our busy day filled with MTV, IPods, Playstations, jobs that feed and cloth us, and be greatful for what we do have. After all where Americans, thats enough to put a smile on my face every morning. But maybe thats just me!
